Walking dead

Every Sunday most people go to church, or have a family dinner and relax. My family isn't one of those families. All day today we've sat around and watched TV, football, random shows that come on..
But my favorite part of these type of Sundays is at 8:00 when walking dead comes on. I have just recently fallen in love with this show and my fiancée and just can't get enough of it! You get to really connect with each of the characters . Zombies have taken over a lot of things lately! I can't wait to see the new movie warm bodies whenever it comes out (:

Drafting. Drafting. Drafting

I haven't actually started my paper yet because I'm sort of at a loss as to where to start. I almost feel like I have too much information and that when I actually start writing that it will be a little awkward. I hope to accomplish informing my auidence which are my classmates, and my professor of course. I suppose if this paper wasnt work a class my topic would be one that I would write for anyone who was a member of a greek organization, or the parents of those young audlts. My major point of this paper is to illistrate how society has taken hazing and turned it into a glamourous process, when people have actully died from this! I plan to use the show Greek, and the different movies that show "normal" fraternity or sorority life to show that being a member of the greek life community does NOT mean we drink every night, sleep with who ever and what ever... and also that hazing is not something that a man or woman should do to gain intrance into a greek organization. A sisterhood/brotherhood is about loyalty, love, and trust. If you have to be physically or emotionally abused to gain someones loyalty, love and trust.. run.. run very far away.

Meanwhile in math 1710...

I'm sitting here in this math class waiting for my professor to stop lecturing, because she obviously doesn't know that constant lecturing doesn't get anyone anywhere. I honestly feel bad for her at times because I come to class, sit here and basically text the whole class period and never take a single note.. Because the online homework is what actually teaches me.. So why should we have to pay for these professors to just sit here and ramble on and on about meaningless formulas to equations that I more than likely will never use in my life. If I ever own my own business I will hire an accountant- simple as that.
Maybe this is what is wrong with society these days? We sit around doing nothing and then when trying to become successful we look for other people to help us get to the success we so earnestly desire. I sort of feel bad. But then again, I don't. An accountant usually loves math.. Because if not then why did they choose this as their major and then now have a degree in that subject?

These may be random thoughts.. But oh well. It took up a good fifteen minutes of my time just sitting here.. Waiting for class to be let out.

Nov. 13

Organization is usally a problem for me when it comes to just about anything, but for some reason I'm doing fairly well with this paper! I'm using online folders on my computers documents file. Also several of my sources are shows and movies, so I have them stored in my Instant Que on my netflix account. (:

Election madness

Now that it's been a few days since the recent election has happened, I thought it would be great to talk about how crazy facebook became on tuesday night when the results were announced.

As I logged onto my facebook my news feed was swarmed with angry republicans posts about how they were moving to canada, or that the world was ending. It got me thinking about how these young people became such strong republicans. Was it their parents who taught them their values or ideas? Or are those their own beliefs that they have educated them selfs on. I personally was raised democratic and the older I became I started to actually research what each presidents values were and compair them to my own. The saddest part about all of the facebook posts you see about the election are so uneducated!! These young people are just going with what their parents tell them to, and aren't actually looking into the FACTS about the different parties. It drives me crazy!

Sarwarity Girls

I've lived in Tennssee my whole life, and being a southern girl usualy comes with the tradition of being in a sorority. Although neighter of my parents were greek, all of my cousins on my mothers side were. So once I being a college woman, I felt like i jus had to go through recruitment.. well, to make a long story short, I fell in love with being in a sorority.

Most of my friends now are greek, only because those are the people who I'm around mostly, but a majority of my friends from high school are seriously anti-greek and I never knew why.

It's probably due to the way pop culture makes us sorority women look. I can go on youtube and look up at least one thousand videos of people making fun of us sorority girls and honestly making us all look like all we do is drink, talk shit about people, and have sex...

First off, I do not drink.. I didn't really drink before KD and i especially do not now..
Secondly, I'm one of the most honest people ever created... not everyone fits into the seterotype!

So please, normal non greek people.. give us a chance!

Dirty Pop

So I'm sure most of my fellow classmates are somewhere around the 90's rage of babies.. with the exception of a few.. but anywho. When I was younger, I was literally OBSESSED with Nsync, like it wasn't just a matter of me liking them.. I mean I had Nsync bed spred.. Nsync lunch pale, backpack, all of my note books had Jusin Timberlake's face alllll over it. I mean, thats not a bad thing, but that's besides the point. As the years flew by and I became older, I got out of that stage, and it has led me to my thoughts today.

What kind of music will my children be obsessed with when they are about six or seven?

hopefully it's not justin bieber.. someone please tell that child that he just can't sing. As weird as this is, I hope my children are in love with classical music, or at least an artist like Allen Stone, who sing about things going on in the world, and not just "baby.. baby.. baby.. oooo" or "leeme see dat booty work". What has music come to today? Are people even listening to half of the lyrics of rap songs? Im not saying I dont like rap, but every now and then when I'm bored I'll actually listen to these songs they play on the radio. It's all about someone getting laid, or some dude talking about some girls ass. What happened to Nsync music? "it's tearing up my heart when I'm with you, and when we are a part I feel it too. and no matter what I do, I feel the paiiiiinnn. With or without you!" nothing in that songs disrespects a woman, or even hints to the fact that "hey! I totally just want to bang you!" Maybe it's just me, and MAYBE I pay just a little bit to much attention to lyrics of songs these days. but here you go blog.. here are my feelings.

thanks for listening.

Sources

One of my sources is from the internet, well... actually most of them our, and it seems like a really great source.. but with Hazing as my topic a lot of these sites I'm finding are more opinion based and less factual, so.. It's just really annoying.. Like i've kind of yet to find a source on Hazing and hazing prevention that actually gives me good info, or facts and not just what someone thinks about hazing. If I wanted an opinion about hazing.. trust me, I've got a few. thats not what I need. I'm REALLY behind in this paper.. and maybe that's due to the fact that the majority of my sources are only internet sources. but like.. who has the time to read a book these days? not this girl. HELP.

He ain't Heavy He My Brother

I'm not sure if anyone else in our class is a part of the Greek community here at MTSU, but if you are... You were forced to watch this awful video this last Thursday.

Okay, first off, this was a video about Hazing, since PIKE at UT just had to make one of their pledges butt chug a beer and it almost killed him.. We all have to go through these 'anti hazing' events to reassure our new babies that we won't make them do thing like this.

The movie starts out pretty hilarious, I actually was laughing pretty hard because of the funny things they were making the guys do. . But very quickly it gets disturbing.. They start to beat the pledges with wooden paddles, until they can't take it anymore, and every time they are struck they must yell out "he ain't heavy, he my brother". Now how this makes you a closer brotherhood-- I'm kind of confused.

My sisters would never make me do anything that would make me feel so small and insignificant, they always loft me up and make me feel like I'm one of a kind. This movie was so extreme, but the sad part about all of this, is that this actually does happen, especially I the African American fraternities.

At the end of the movie, one of the main characters were being forced to run for hours and hours, and finally his heart gives out and he has a heart attack and dies.. And where was his brothers? Running away from him without even calling 911 until after he was dead.

Sarcastic little Dana

After reading Dana Stevens article where she basically is just bashing Johnson's article about how TV makes you smarter, by saying that TV doesn't make you smarter. She just flat out disagrees with him by pointing out his main points, and then gives specific examples as to watching tv really isn't helpful. She also touches on commercials and if you think about it, most people now a days don't really even watch commercials because we have learned to tune them out, or fast forward through them. I feel like when she talks about Johnson's graph or chart that he uses is "hilarious",she may not just understand where he came up with that graph and how it shows the difference between the complication of modern day TV and what they watched back in the days. I never really realized how important TV was to a lot of people, and honestly I had never heard of this "tv turn off week" so maybe TV is important to me, and I just never knew it!

Gangnam style

So I'm sure everyone has seen this new video that is surfacing around on YouTube these days called Gangnam Style, where this Korean man is dancing around like he's ridding a horse.. And if you haven't seen it, I suggest you do. Apparently it has become the most view video ever.. Now that seems a bit hard to believe, but then again it's hilarious. So a few nights ago when another one of my friends in Facebook posted the famous video, I traveled over to YouTube and started watching other videos that it suggested to me after I watched this one.

Let me just say, Koreans know how to get down, and I never knew this! I spent about an hour watching different K pop as it's referred to, videos and I must say I am now a fan.
Even though I don't speak Korean, or even slightly understand it, I still enjoyed watching these girls who were absolutely beautiful dance around and sing in these almost too high pitched voices. it's funny to see that even their pop music is suggestive and has women prancing around barely clothed in their videos, just like in America!

Movie time

This weekend when my boyfriend came home from school he wanted to go see a movie. So after we argued about what movie to go see, we finally decided on the new horror movie called The Possesion. Let me first start out by saying if you a scared very easily by demonic things and such I wouldn't even go near this movie. I normally can handle those exorcism movies because usually they are fake, or overly dramatic to the point of being hard to believe. But not this time.....

Not only was I tightly grasping Jonathan's (my boyfriend.. Well fiancé but that's still so new for me to say) hand out of love, but I was holding on for dear life because I was so scared! The most thrilling part of this movie is of course when the demon completely takes over the little girls body and starts to run rampid through this hospital she is in, and she runs into the mourge where all of these dead bodies are laying just faintly covered with sheets.... And all of a sudden you see her standing underneath this red emergency light and she starts chanting almost this one phrase "help me daddy, I'm scared" over and over again... And then she goes silent, and BOOM! The lights go off and it leaves you like " where the hell did she just go?!?!?"

Of course, there was the stereotypical black guy in the theater with us and when this happens he stands up and yells "awh hell naw, she gon get yo ass." that made everyone laugh and helped lighten the mood! Over all I loved this movie, it actually felt like something I could actually believe would have happened! GO SEE THIS!

Baby grive me one more try..

Now I know you're probably wondering why my title says "grive" instead of give.. Well it's solely because for the last four, extremely long years of my life I have worked at an Asian restaurant. Most Chinese people have a hard time pronouncing certain words or in my boss' case... Every word in English. So the other day when I was working I was talking with my boss and she was trying to name a song to me.. Sort of like a guessing game.

She would "sing" a few words and do a little dance.. Now even though I knew what song she was asking about after the first time she showed me, I kept saying "no.. I don't know what you're singing."
Without fail, Lisa, my boss, starts to sing the new maroon 5 song that goes as follows. "..got you stuck on my body, on my body, like a tattoo -ooo and now I'm feelin stupid, feelin stupid, runnin' back to you -ooo.." there's more, but this is what she kept singing. Her version was more of something along these lines.. " got oo struck on my brody, on my Brody, like a tattrrooooooo.. Now I is stupid, I is stupid ruhnning bat to rooo"

It's safe to say I was laughing so hard to the point of tears. I love my little Asian family and all of the funny things they do, it's just crazy how much othey LOVE our culture, and the things you wouldn't think they'd enjoy.. They do(:

I found these memes on Chinese people so I thought I'd share!

Prepared for class? Nahhh

I usually don't per say prepare for class so much, I just mainly read the material and try to understand what it's saying. I try to be involved in class, because it seems our class is a very quiet one and not many people speak up. But that's okay, it's only the second week of class so I suppose some people are still within their shells. I personally enjoy classroom discussion because I don't always understand what I'm reading so if I hear others ideas about the same things I've just read, it helps me really grasp what's going on!

Does TV really make us smarter?

In Steven Johnson's essay 'Watching TV Makes You Smarter' he talks about this theory called the Sleeper Curve and how it can actually have a positive outcome on us as we watch these shows that are so called "bad for us". He then goes on to talk about how most sitcoms are not challenging us to engage our minds, and that the intellectual work is more or less happening on the screen than it is Off the screen.

My initial thoughts are that this man is so right! Too often are people my age and younger told by older generations that what we do, watch, listen to is "bad" and will only lead to negative outcomes, when it's just pure ignorant people who actually choose to take the violence they see on TV and use it in real life. I believe that these violent TV shows and video games can show a child or teen ager what isn't acceptable in society, such as gang violence, drug use, and profanity.

I didn't quite understand the graphs that he used in this essay to illustrate the "total number of active threads" so hopefully someone could help me understand them!

My name is Kate Deshotels and I am without a doubt a sweet, southern girl. I am a proud memeber of Kappa Delta and this is my first year here at MTSU. I previously trasfered from Tennessee Tech, in Cookeville TN, and I am so glad that I did so. I have four fabulous cats at home, one of which is only 7 months old and is so adorable! Usually I tend to love reality TV shows like any other woman, but lately I have found intrest in two shows on the SYFI network, which are titles Warehouse 13 and Alphas. Now I dont seem like a science fiction type of girl, but deep down inside I just love it! I love these shows because it shows a different perspective to the world as we know it. Both of these shows are 'super human' crime fighters or detectives that use their vast amount of history knowledge to solve mysteries and to help bring justice to the evil creatures that lurke around our world! Okay, so obviously I'm a tad bit nerdy, but I blame all of this on my father. I have always been a so called "daddy's girl" and for 'bonding time' my father and I watch these shows together and have always loved watching SYFI shows since I can remember.

I havent had too much experience with research and argument type of writing, because my high school made everything so easy that I never really wash challenged. The only the I have done with this type of subject is when I took ENG 1020 at Tech and my porfessor made us do almost the same thing we are doing in this class! So I've got an idea of what I'm supposed to be doing, but I may need some asistance later on! I argue about pretty much everything, even things I am certain that I do not know, so I think this will be somewhat fun to learn how to take my stuborn way of thinking and turn it into a porfessional way of thinking and writing. (:
